Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
