"Any idea when you're chatting with Haim?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated supporters have publicly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their videos often show them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"So everyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent confidence required a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international audience.

However the band will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
